Brachycephaly
Brachycephaly is a condition where the head is disproportionately wide, it can result from the premature fusion of the coronal sutures or from external deformation (usually prolonged lying on the back leading to a positional deformity). The head flattens uniformly, creating a much wider and shorter head. An increase in head height is also common occurance in children with brachycephaly.
Brachycephaly results from early closure of the coronal sutures and is also present in numerous syndromal abnormalities including Apert, Crouzon, Carpenters, Pfeiffer and Saethre-Chotzen syndromes.
Scaphocephaly
Scaphocephaly, or dolichocephaly, is the condition where the head is disproportionately long and narrow. Scaphocephaly can occur from the premature fusion of the sagittal suture or from external deformation. Scaphocephaly is more common among infants who are born prematurely.
